A heartfelt letter from Leah Williamson to head coach Renée Slegers, fans, and the entire Islington community
Dear Coach Slegers, Arsenal Fans, and the Beloved Islington Community:
There are times in life when words don’t seem adequate—but I’m going to try because you all deserve it and more.
I felt it from the moment I went through Arsenal’s gates. A warm feeling. A sensation of belonging. A purpose. This club, this jersey, and this community all become home. You supported me through every high, setback, injury, and success. You helped me when I was struggling. When I stood up, you roared. And today, as I reflect on this journey, I’m filled with appreciation.
To Coach Renée Slegers, thank you. Not only did you believe in me as a player, but you also saw me as a person. You took on a role that demanded power, vision, and heart, and you provided all three in abundance. Your leadership has guided us both tactically and emotionally. You challenged me to lead with grace, play with boldness, and grow beyond my expectations. It’s difficult to find a coach that understands both the game and people. You’ve had an impact on both my professional and personal life.
To the fans, what can I say that truly honors you? You’ve cheered us on those freezing nights at Meadow Park and filled the Emirates with unshakable enthusiasm. You’ve designed banners, composed songs, and created a presence that opponents sense before the ball is ever kicked. Your faith in me, even during times when I doubted myself, gave me strength I didn’t realize I possessed. You reminded me of who I was just when I needed it the most. Thank you for every chant, sweet letter, and tear you shed beside us, win or lose.
To the great people of Islington, you are the heart of this club. Beyond the stadium’s confines, you’ve demonstrated what it means to be a true community member. From school visits and community activities to simply stumbling into locals on Highbury streets, your warmth and enthusiasm for Arsenal women’s football have impacted people’s lives, including mine. You’ve made me proud to wear this emblem, not just as an athlete, but also as a symbol of something far larger than football.
This is not our final goodbye. This is a love letter. Thank you. I promise to take you all with me wherever this journey takes me next. Whether I’m on the field or watching from the stands, I’ll always support the red and white. I’ll always be one of you.
To young ladies watching from the stands or dreaming in their bedrooms: keep dreaming. This club, sport, and community offers space for you. And we’ll be waiting to cheer you on.
With my whole heart,
Leah Williamson
Always a Gunner.
Forever grateful.
