Tom Izzo, the famous head coach of Michigan State men’s basketball, has been selected the Nation’s Best Coach by a panel of national sportswriters, former players, and NCAA officials, cementing his status as one of the greatest to ever grace the sidelines. The renowned award, issued by the National College Basketball Coaches Association, recognizes not only victories and championships, but also a career of influence, leadership, and transformative impact on student-athletes and the game itself.
For more than three decades, Tom Izzo has been the throbbing heart of Michigan State basketball. Taking over in 1995, the Iron Mountain native developed a recognized program into a national powerhouse known for toughness, honesty, player development, and a never-ending pursuit of perfection. Under his coaching, the Spartans have made 25 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, won eight Big Ten crowns, advanced to eight Final Fours, and won the national championship in 2000.
But what distinguishes Izzo—and ultimately earned him this distinguished distinction—is something that cannot be assessed solely by statistics. His impact off the court has been equally deep. Known as “Mr. March” for his postseason wizardry, Izzo is also regarded as a father figure to hundreds of young men who have graduated from his program.
“Coach Izzo changed my life,” stated Draymond Green, a former Spartan and four-time NBA champion. “He improved me not only as a player, but also as a person. He held me accountable, believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself, and always told me the truth, no matter how difficult it was to hear.”
The prize committee reflected that view, applauding Izzo for sustaining quality while adhering to his ideals in a period of fast change in collegiate sports.
“In a time when loyalty, player development, and program culture are under threat from constant transfers and NIL chaos, Tom Izzo remains a beacon of consistency and purpose,” the statement accompanying the award said.
Izzo, 69, accepted the medal with customary modesty at a small ceremony in East Lansing.
“This award belongs to my players, my assistants, and every single person who’s ever worn the green and white,” he informed us. “I’ve been extremely privileged to be able to do what I love, in the area I love, with the people I care about. “Michigan State has given me everything.”
