For Coach James Franklin, the journey to University Park was more than just a professional one; it became personal. Since taking over Penn State football in 2014, Franklin has not only developed a winning program, but also something more meaningful: a home, a family, and a lifelong tie with a community that lives and breathes blue and white.

When Franklin came at Happy Valley, he found a program seeking stability, leadership, and a return to its proud traditions. What followed was a transition characterized by discipline, resilience, and a firmly held belief in the value of relationships—between coaches and players, students and the university, and the program and the larger community. “It’s not just football,” Franklin frequently states. “It’s about building men, building futures, and building something that lasts far beyond Saturday afternoons.”

Franklin has restored Penn State football to national prominence through consecutive double-digit win seasons, New Year’s Six bowl victories, and consistent Top 25 rankings. However, it is his off-the-field effect that has grabbed the hearts of Nittany Lion fans. From coaching student-athletes in the classroom and beyond to becoming a revered figure on campus and in the community, Franklin has become ingrained in Penn State culture.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he said in a recent interview. “Not only did Penn State impact my job, but it also changed my life. My daughters are growing up here. My family has its roots here. And I’ve found a home here.” Franklin’s passionate connection to the university and its people shines through in everything he does, from his early morning practices and motivational speeches to his dedication to diversity, academic excellence, and mental health awareness. His players describe him as more than a coach; he’s a father figure, a role model, and an unwavering motivator.

One senior linebacker said it best: “Coach Franklin believes in us before we believe in ourselves. He motivates us to become better players and men. “That’s what makes him unique.” As the Nittany Lions prepare for another promising season, the atmosphere in Happy Valley is electrifying. Fans believe, players are inspired, and the team’s relationship with its leader has never been greater. Coach James Franklin considers Pennsylvania to be more than just a place where he works.

As he continues to lead with passion and purpose, one thing is certain: Penn State’s brightest days are ahead. 🦁💙
