Lubbock, Texas — A legendary chapter in the world of football has just been officially immortalized.
In a prestigious ceremony filled with emotion, memories, and standing ovations, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to the sport of football, from grassroots development to the national stage.
McGuire, known for his trademark passion, tireless work ethic, and magnetic leadership, accepted the award surrounded by former players, coaches, and community leaders who have been impacted by his decades-long commitment to the game.
> “I never got into coaching for awards,” McGuire said, holding back tears. “I did it because I love this game, I love these kids, and I believe football changes lives.”
The award — presented by the National Football Coaches Foundation — celebrates McGuire’s transformative impact at every level, from his time building powerhouse high school programs in Texas to reshaping the identity of Texas Tech football in the collegiate ranks.
McGuire’s career began humbly at Cedar Hill High School, where he turned a struggling program into a state championship juggernaut. With over 140 high school wins and three state titles, he became a beacon of grassroots football excellence and a mentor to countless student-athletes.
After transitioning to the college level, McGuire quickly made waves at Baylor before being tapped as the head coach for Texas Tech University in 2021. His infectious energy and bold culture-first approach sparked a Red Raider revival. Under his leadership, Texas Tech posted multiple winning seasons, achieved landmark bowl victories, and re-established itself as a Big 12 powerhouse.
> “He didn’t just coach football — he changed people’s lives,” said one former player. “Coach McGuire made us believe, on and off the field.”
But it’s not just wins and trophies that define his legacy. McGuire has been lauded nationally for his dedication to developing student-athletes as people — emphasizing character, community service, and academic excellence.
His grassroots outreach, particularly in underserved communities, has inspired a new generation of young coaches and players across Texas.
> “Whether you were a five-star recruit or the last kid on the bench, Joey treated you with the same belief and respect,” said one Texas high school coach in attendance. “That’s why so many of us look up to him.”
The ceremony concluded with a roaring standing ovation, as McGuire was presented with a custom Red Raiders-themed gold football and a commemorative plaque bearing the inscription:
“For Vision, Legacy, and a Life Devoted to the Game.”
As McGuire took one final look at the crowd, his message was clear:
> “We’ve come a long way, but I’m not done yet. There’s more to build. More lives to impact. More ball to coach.”
Joey McGuire’s name now belongs among the greats — not just for the games he won, but for the hearts he changed.
