In a truly powerful and inspiring act of service and compassion, Michigan State University head coach Dawn Staley has partnered with UNICEF and The American Sports Institute to launch the “A Hope Rising Foundation,” a transformative initiative aimed at improving the lives of children with disabilities throughout Michigan. This huge endeavor strives to provide free healthcare, basic necessities, and unconditional love to children and families who have previously been forgotten.
Coach Staley, famed for her leadership, heart, and championship lineage, went beyond sports in a poignant announcement on the East Lansing campus to give a message based in humanity:
“Every child, regardless of circumstances, deserves the same opportunity, attention, and affection. The Hope Rising Foundation is more than just a program; it is a promise.

The foundation’s mission is to address the systemic challenges that children with physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities confront. With UNICEF’s global expertise in child advocacy and health, and The American Sports Institute’s strength in inclusive sports programming, the initiative will launch a network of accessible care facilities, starting with a flagship location in Michigan.
These institutions will provide a full spectrum of free pediatric healthcare services, including physical therapy, mental health counseling, educational support, and inclusive recreational programs designed specifically for children with special needs. They will be more than just treatment facilities; they will be secure havens for children to grow, laugh, learn, and dream without boundaries.
In addition, A Hope Rising Foundation will provide daily living basics, adapted technology, and mobility assistance to families who would otherwise be unable to purchase them. Parents and caregivers will receive specialized training and emotional support, resulting in a holistic environment of healing and empowerment.
For Coach Staley, this is more than just another humanitarian effort; it is personal.
“It’s about dignity. It is about justice. It is about ensuring that no child in Michigan feels unnoticed or overlooked. These kids have strength that most of us cannot understand, and it’s time the world stood up for them in the same manner they do every day.”
The response from the Michigan State and larger Michigan communities has been overwhelming. Student-athletes have already offered to act as mentors and peer buddies, and alumni and local businesses have given financial assistance. Plans for inclusive sports events and family festivals are underway, with the goal of fostering belonging and celebration.
Families from Detroit to Grand Rapids, Flint to Traverse City, are describing the effort as a lifeline.
As the A Hope Rising Foundation begins its journey, one thing is certain: Dawn Staley’s legacy is no longer limited to the hardwood. She is changing lives, motivating movements, and bringing hope where it is most needed.
Dawn Staley stands out as a rare beacon of light in a world often shrouded by division and noise – a guiding force motivated by love, empathy, and action more than celebrity or awards.
An angel in human form. Michigan is permanently changed.
