In an emotional and unexpected event that has rocked Mountaineer Nation, West Virginia University Head Football Coach Rich Rodriguez has broken his silence after weeks of rumors concerning his health. During a news appearance at Milan Puskar Stadium early Tuesday morning, Rodriguez verified the suspicions, revealing that he has been secretly dealing with a major health issue.

Rodriguez, 61, made the revelation calmly and candidly, addressing the West Virginia community, his team, and supporters throughout the country who had voiced concern about his recent absence from spring practices and offseason media activities.

“This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” he told me. “Coaching is in my blood.” But lately, I’ve had to face something much more difficult than game day: my own health.”

Rodriguez went on to say that he was diagnosed with early-stage lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymph system. He explained that, while the diagnosis was frightening at first, it was detected early due to proactive testing, and he has already began treatment with a hopeful outlook.

“Thanks to an incredible medical team, early detection, and the unwavering support of my family, I’m ready to fight this head-on,” Rodriguez said with a smile. “I’ve coached many clashes on the field. Now I’m coaching myself through this one.”

The announcement elicited an outpouring of emotion—players stood visibly frightened, assistants fought back tears, and social media erupted with tributes and messages of support from fans, former players, and other coaches.

Rodriguez made it clear that this is neither a resignation nor a retirement.

“Let me be clear: I am not stepping down.” I’m rising up to a new task. My physicians believe I can continue to coach while having treatment, and I intend to lead this squad with the same passion I’ve always had.”

The university and athletic department issued an official statement shortly after the news conference:

“Coach Rodriguez is a fighter and a leader who is an integral part of this program. We fully support him and his family at every stage of this adventure.”

Rodriguez’s return to West Virginia in 2024 revived fan passion and renewed hope for the program he helped bring to national prominence in the early 2000s. The Mountaineers returned to contention under his guidance, and his no-nonsense, player-first approach has won over hearts in Morgantown once more.

Messages of support flowed in from across the college football world. Coaches included Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin, and Dabo Swinney offered prayers and encouragement. Former Mountaineer players rallied behind their coach, praising his strength and effect in their lives.

“Coach Rod changed my life,” a former player wrote. “Now it’s time for us to stand with him like he stood with us.”

Rich Rodriguez will not tackle this unexpected chapter alone. With the support of the Mountaineer community and the fortitude that has defined his career, he enters this personal war with the heart of a champion.

Mountaineer Nation supports you, Coach. Always.
