ESPN REPORT: Bill Courtney, Former Miami Associate Head Coach, Joins Temple as Assistant
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Temple men’s basketball has added a seasoned veteran to its coaching staff. Former Miami Hurricanes associate head coach Bill Courtney has officially joined the Temple Owls as an assistant coach, the university announced this week.
Courtney brings with him over 30 years of coaching experience, including multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, a Final Four run, and a recent stint as interim head coach at Miami. He now reunites with Temple head coach Adam Fisher, who also spent time on staff at Miami prior to taking over the Owls program.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Bill Courtney to the Temple family,” said Fisher in a statement. “He’s a proven winner who understands what it takes to succeed at the highest level of college basketball. His experience and leadership will be invaluable as we continue to build something special here.”
Courtney’s most recent role came during the 2024–25 season, when he stepped up as Miami’s interim head coach following the midseason retirement of Jim Larrañaga. Under Courtney, the Hurricanes remained competitive in the ACC and finished with a respectable record despite the coaching transition.
Courtney had served as Miami’s associate head coach since 2022 and was a key part of the Hurricanes’ historic Final Four run in 2023 and their Elite Eight appearance in 2022. Known for his defensive strategies, player development, and strong recruiting ties—especially in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions—he is expected to bring those same strengths to North Broad Street.
His coaching résumé includes stops at Cornell (as head coach from 2010–2016), Virginia, George Mason (during their 2006 Final Four), Providence, and DePaul, among others. At Cornell, he led the Big Red through a rebuilding phase and developed several All-Ivy players. As an assistant throughout his career, Courtney has been instrumental in recruiting nationally-ranked classes and mentoring NBA-level talent.
Temple is coming off a 17-win season that included a trip to the AAC Championship game, signaling progress under Coach Fisher. The addition of Courtney is viewed as a major step forward as the Owls aim to return to national prominence.
“Bill brings a championship mentality, elite-level recruiting, and an unmatched understanding of the game,” Fisher added. “He’ll help us elevate everything we’re doing.”
As the 2025–26 season approaches, expectations are rising in Philadelphia. With a bolstered coaching staff and key returning players, the Owls are looking to make noise in the American Athletic Conference—and possibly beyond.
