EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN — A beloved figure in Michigan State basketball history is officially back in East Lansing. Former Spartans standout Goran Suton is returning to the program — this time not as a player, but as a graduate assistant coach, bringing his experience, leadership, and Spartan pride full circle.
Suton, a key figure during one of MSU’s most iconic NCAA Tournament runs in 2009, will now join Tom Izzo’s coaching staff while pursuing graduate studies. The move marks a significant reunion between the Spartans program and one of its most respected alumni, with many around campus and the basketball community applauding the decision.
> “It feels like coming home,” said Suton. “Michigan State shaped me as a player and a person. To have the opportunity to give back to the program and mentor the next generation is truly an honor.”
Suton, originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, played for Michigan State from 2005 to 2009. Known for his toughness, rebounding, high basketball IQ, and clutch shooting, Suton was instrumental in the Spartans’ thrilling run to the 2009 NCAA Championship Game, where they fell to North Carolina. His performances against top-seeded teams — particularly his dominance in the Midwest Regional — cemented his legacy as one of Izzo’s most reliable postseason performers.
Now, more than a decade later, he returns with international playing experience, professional insight, and a deep understanding of what it means to wear the green and white. He’ll serve as a vital bridge between MSU’s championship culture and the new era of Spartan basketball.
Coach Tom Izzo welcomed Suton back with open arms.
> “Goran was the kind of player every coach loves — smart, selfless, and relentless,” said Izzo. “He’s got a great basketball mind and even more importantly, he understands the values and work ethic that define Michigan State. He’s going to be a tremendous asset to our staff and a great mentor to our guys.”
Suton’s role will include assisting in practices, film sessions, individual workouts, and player development, particularly helping MSU’s frontcourt talent navigate the physical and mental challenges of Big Ten basketball. His experience both in the NCAA and playing overseas adds a valuable perspective for today’s players aiming to build careers on and off the court.
Reactions from fans and alumni have poured in across social media, with the hashtag #WayToGoGoran trending among Spartan Nation. Former teammates and coaches have voiced their excitement, calling his return a “perfect fit” for a program built on loyalty, grit, and legacy.
> “Spartan for life,” Suton added. “That’s not just something we say — it’s something we live. I’m ready to help the next generation write their own chapter of MSU greatness.”
As the 2025–26 season approaches, Goran Suton’s return brings not only nostalgia but renewed excitement for what lies ahead in East Lansing.
