The NFL has issued a fine and public reprimand for Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski’s comments, as reported by ABC News.

The NFL has fined and publicly chastised Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski for his postgame comments criticising officiating. The league announced the disciplinary action on Tuesday, citing a violation of its standards governing public statements criticising officiating.

Stefanski’s comments came following the Browns’ narrow 24-21 loss last Sunday, which included several questionable calls. In his postgame press conference, the Browns’ head coach voiced anger with what he called “missed and inconsistent” official rulings that he felt harmed his team’s prospects. His comments, which rapidly went viral on social media, included a harsh critique of a vital penalty late in the game.

“The officials need to be held accountable just like the players and coaches are,” Stefanski told reporters. “There were some calls tonight that didn’t make sense, and that’s frustrating when you’re trying to win a football game.”

The NFL quickly replied, issuing a formal statement reminding clubs and coaches of the league’s policy on public criticism of referees. “The NFL holds its game officials to the highest standards and has set up a review procedure for any officiating issues. “Publicly questioning the integrity of officials is against league policy and undermines the game,” the statement stated. “As a result, Kevin Stefanski has been issued a public reprimand and a fine.”

The exact amount of the fine has not been announced, although sources say it might range from $25,000 to $50,000, in line with prior penalties for comparable offences.

Browns players and staff have declined to comment further on the topic, but Stefanski did address it briefly at his weekly media availability. “I understand the league’s stance, and I’ll be more mindful moving forward,” he told reporters. “We have to focus on what we can control as a team and prepare for the next game.”

This is not the first time an NFL coach has been punished for comments concerning officiating, as the league has constantly maintained tough rules against public criticism. While some commentators think that coaches should be able to express their frustrations, the NFL remains committed to defending its officials’ integrity.

The Browns will now seek to put the controversy behind them as they prepare for their next game, hoping to rebound from a painful setback while remaining focused on the field.
