Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has expressed concerns regarding the competitiveness of South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), particularly highlighting the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns and the struggles of traditional powerhouses like Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Broos predicts that Mamelodi Sundowns will clinch the PSL title well ahead of the season’s conclusion, potentially by February or March, with a substantial lead of 12 to 15 points. He attributes this forecast to the lack of formidable competition, stating that the ease with which Sundowns secure victories is detrimental to both the club and South African football at large. Broos emphasizes that regular, challenging matches are crucial for teams to improve and remain competitive on larger stages, such as the CAF Champions League.

The coach also points out that the diminished competitiveness within the PSL may contribute to Sundowns’ challenges in advancing beyond the quarter-final or semi-final stages in continental competitions. He suggests that the lack of rigorous domestic competition leaves the team less prepared for the higher intensity of international matches.

Addressing the performances of other prominent PSL clubs, Broos notes that both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have not been performing at their historical standards. He observes that these teams have been inconsistent, leading to a significant gap between them and Sundowns. Broos stresses that for the overall betterment of South African football, it’s essential for these clubs to regain their competitiveness to challenge Sundowns more effectively.

Broos’s remarks serve as a call to action for PSL clubs to elevate their performance levels. He believes that a more competitive league would not only benefit the clubs domestically but also enhance their performance in international competitions, thereby improving the overall standard of South African football.
