The Big 12 Conference has announced a fine and public reprimand for Texas Tech Lady Raiders’ center, Ella Tofaeono, following comments she made that were deemed in violation of the conference’s sportsmanship policies.

Tofaeono, a senior who played in 34 games during the 2022-23 season, averaging 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, made statements during a recent press conference that the Big 12 considered inappropriate. The specific content of her remarks has not been disclosed.

In response to her comments, the Big 12 has imposed a monetary fine on Tofaeono and issued a formal public reprimand. The conference emphasized its commitment to maintaining a culture of sportsmanship and respect among student-athletes, coaches, and institutions.

Texas Tech University has acknowledged the conference’s decision. The athletic department stated that it will address the matter internally to ensure that all team members uphold the values and standards expected by both the university and the Big 12 Conference.

Tofaeono transferred to Texas Tech after a successful tenure at Midland College, where she was recognized as a Third Team NJCAA All-American and earned First Team All-WJCAC honors. Her contributions have been integral to the Lady Raiders’ performance over the past seasons.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and the responsibilities that come with being a student-athlete. The Big 12 Conference continues to uphold standards that promote respect and integrity both on and off the court.
