LUBBOCK, Texas— Graham Harrell, a former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback and widely regarded as one of the program’s all-time greats, is making his formal return to Lubbock. Texas Tech University announced today that Harrell has been named as the new Player Development Coordinator for the Red Raiders football program. Harrell, who played for Texas Tech from 2005 to 2008, is still one of the most recognizable figures in school history. He set multiple NCAA records during his stint at quarterback, including career throwing touchdowns and overall passing yards. His bond with standout wide receiver Michael Crabtree resulted in some of college football’s most memorable moments, including the Red Raiders’ shocking 2008 upset of then-No. 1 Texas.
After more than a decade of coaching throughout the country, including stints as offensive coordinator at North Texas, USC, West Virginia, and most recently Purdue, Harrell returns to his alma mater to advise players both on and off the field. “I’m thrilled to be coming back home,” Harrell said in a university statement. “Texas Tech helped develop who I am as a player and person. It’s a privilege to be able to work with this new generation of Red Raiders and help them achieve greatness, not only in football, but in life.”
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire applauded Harrell’s return, describing it as “a homecoming that will have an immediate and lasting impact on the program.” “Graham’s experience, leadership, and love for Texas Tech are unmatched,” McGuire told the crowd. “He understands what it takes to succeed here. Our players will gain much from his analysis, mentorship, and enthusiasm for the game.” Harrell’s work as Player Development Coordinator will focus on improving players’ talents, leadership abilities, and personal growth. While he will not be actively involved in play calling, those close to the program believe his football knowledge will be a tremendous asset to the offensive staff.
This is Texas Tech’s latest substantial investment in developing a sustainable and championship-caliber program. The Red Raiders, fresh off a successful Big 12 performance, have emphasized culture, player wellbeing, and leadership as pillars of future success—and Harrell’s acquisition fits that vision perfectly. During his undergraduate career, Harrell threw for over 15,000 yards and 134 touchdowns, earning a spot among the Heisman Trophy contenders and grabbing the attention of Red Raider fans across the country. His return is more than simply a nostalgic boost for the fans; it’s a deliberate decision aimed at creating a winning culture based on tradition and excellence.
Harrell is expected to begin his duties right away and will be publicly unveiled at a news conference early next week.
