Zarnell III, a highly regarded edge rusher out of Ventura College, has formally declared his commitment to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a momentous occasion that combines ambition and legacy. The fundamental familial connection that underpins this choice is that Zarnell III is the son of Texas Tech defensive line coach Zarnell Sr., a well-respected collegiate football coaching veteran.
The commitment is a major defensive gain for the Red Raiders. It is the continuation of a generation-spanning football odyssey for the Zarnell family.
After a spectacular sophomore season at Ventura College, when he produced 13 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles, Zarnell III has become one of the country’s best junior college edge defenders. He attracted the interest of Power Five institutions nationwide with his explosive first step, unrelenting motor, and ability to disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage.
Despite receiving offers from Florida State, Arizona State, and Oregon, he couldn’t resist the chance to play for his father at Texas Tech.
When Zarnell III made his statement, he remarked, “I’ve watched my dad coach some of the best, and I’ve dreamed of one day being on the same sideline.” “This is about legacy, loyalty, and completing what our family started—it’s not just about football.”
Since joining the Red Raiders coaching staff last year, Coach Zarnell Sr. has played a key role in changing Texas Tech’s defensive identity. In a system he helped create, he will now be able to mentor his own son.
“As a father as well as a coach, I am proud of this moment,” Zarnell Sr. remarked. Zarnell is deserving of this. He didn’t cut corners. He came here to compete after working and growing.
Joey McGuire, the head coach of Texas Tech, commended the decision, pointing out the culture and harmony the Zarnells will bring to the locker room. According to McGuire, Zarnell III is a dangerous defender who is intelligent and well-behaved due to his father’s influence.
Now that the Red Raiders have a dynamic father-son team on the same side of the trenches, Texas Tech fans have even more to look forward to as the 2025 season draws near.
