In response to Edmonton’s quiet off-season thus far, team insider Bob Stauffer revealed on Oilers Now that the team is targeting veteran checking center Jason Dickinson, an unrestricted free agency. In a few weeks, Dickinson will turn 31.

1. Stauffer is the Master of Whispers in Edmonton. If he makes such a suggestion, we can infer that there is a significant organizational effort underway and that a new contract may already be in the works.

2. Stauffer conjectured on May 8 about the potential expense of a new contract for Dickinson: “Dickinson, he got paid well by Chicago.” Additionally, they needed to reach the floor of the pay cap. I believe someone will take the initiative to pay him to be a 3C. He could likely get between $3.75 and $4.25 million annually on a four-year contract, in my opinion.
3. It would be advantageous for all parties if the Oilers could sign Dickinson to a four-year contract worth $4.25 million annually. Dickinson will probably continue to be a useful third-line checking center for a minimum of two more years. However, the latter two years of that contract, when he is 33 and 34, become far more uncertain for the team. It would be ideal if his No Movement Clause was limited to the first two seasons.
In essence, he is a muscular, mobile, and reliable player who is unlikely to score many goals. Whether or not he can perform as a cunning, aggressive, and effective checker in a third-line role and on the top penalty kill is crucial. Although the Oilers have another center in Josh Samanski, who is probably just as good a bet as Dickinson, he has a respectable shot to accomplish it.

Because of this, I don’t mind if the Oilers pass on Dickinson, giving Samanski a chance. However, Stauffer’s proposed contract is also acceptable to me. Excellent depth at center is a wise idea, and Dickinson will be very helpful in that regard.
