ssionate Gamecocks community, former Heisman Trophy winner and legendary running back George Rogers has pledged an astounding $18.2 million donation toward the construction of the Gamecocks’ new football stadium. This landmark contribution, the largest ever by a former student-athlete in school history, underscores Rogers’ deep loyalty to his alma mater and his commitment to the continued growth of the football program that launched him into national stardom.

Rogers, who captured the Heisman Trophy in 1980 after a record-breaking career at South Carolina, has long been revered not only for his accomplishments on the field but also for his humility, character, and enduring support for the university. His generous donation marks a new chapter in Gamecock football history, signaling a bold investment in the program’s future and providing a strong foundation for what promises to be a world-class athletic facility.

“This program has given me everything,” Rogers said during the official announcement event. “It gave me a platform, it gave me an education, and it gave me a family. I want to make sure future generations of Gamecocks have the same—if not better—opportunities to succeed and thrive.”

The new stadium, which is expected to feature state-of-the-art amenities, expanded seating capacity, enhanced training facilities, and modern fan engagement features, is a major step in elevating South Carolina’s competitiveness within the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and nationally. University officials have confirmed that the facility will bear Rogers’ name in recognition of his monumental contribution and lifelong dedication to the program.

University President Dr. Michael Amiridis and Athletic Director Ray Tanner expressed profound gratitude for Rogers’ gift, calling it a “transformational moment” for Gamecock athletics. “George Rogers is a true legend—not just because of what he did with the ball in his hands, but because of the kind of man he is,” said Tanner. “This donation is more than a number. It’s a legacy, and it will change lives.”

Fans, alumni, and former teammates have taken to social media to celebrate the announcement, many describing Rogers’ generosity as a full-circle moment for the Gamecock family. The new stadium project is slated to begin construction in early 2026, with a targeted opening by the 2028 football season.

As the Gamecocks look to the future with renewed hope and ambition, George Rogers has once again led the way—this time not by rushing past defenders, but by investing in a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
