has reversed his pledge from Michigan to Wisconsin, rejecting rumoured multimillion-dollar NIL offers to pursue a different path. The decision was made public on November 24, 2024, following Smith’s official visit to Wisconsin ahead of the Badgers’ high-profile game versus Oregon.

Smith, a talented dual-threat quarterback from Fort Myers, Florida, originally committed to Michigan in November 2023. Smith, one of the best quarterback prospects in the 2025 class, was largely regarded as a key member of Michigan’s future offence. However, the Wolverines’ pursuit of five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood prompted Smith to reconsider his promise. He formally decommitted from Michigan in October 2024, allowing him to pursue new options.

Despite receiving interest from several powerhouse programs—including Penn State, Notre Dame, and Florida State—Smith ultimately chose Wisconsin, citing a strong connection with the coaching staff and a clear path to playing time. While details of financial offers remain speculative, it has been reported that Smith turned down a seven-figure NIL package to join the Badgers, choosing fit and development over immediate monetary gain.

The commitment represents a huge victory for Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell, who has aggressively reshaped the program’s recruiting identity since taking over in 2022. Smith is now the highest-rated recruit in Wisconsin’s 2025 class, and he is anticipated to push for a starting position early in his college career.

“Carter is a game-changer,” said a Wisconsin staff member. “He brings athleticism, intelligence, and leadership. His decision speaks volumes about our culture and where we’re heading.”

Smith’s decision also signals a broader trend in college football recruiting. With the landscape increasingly influenced by NIL deals and high-profile commitments, Smith’s move stands out as a reminder that personal fit and opportunity still matter. Fans and analysts alike are applauding his choice to prioritize football development and team alignment over headlines.

Michigan, meanwhile, will look to Bryce Underwood and other prospects to fill the vacuum created by Smith’s departure. For Wisconsin, this decision might mark a watershed moment in the program’s quarterback trajectory and national prominence.

As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Carter Smith to see if he can deliver on his potential and help elevate Wisconsin into serious Big Ten contention. The stage is set, and the spotlight has found its next quarterback to watch.
