Michigan State Reaches Landmark $30 Million Settlement with Three Survivors of 2023 Campus Shooting

East Lansing, MI (June 10, 2025) – Michigan State University (MSU) has confirmed it has reached settlement agreements totaling approximately $30 million with three students grievously injured during the Feb 13, 2023 mass shooting on campus. The victims—Nathan Statly, Yukai “John” Hao, and Troy Forbush—sustained life-altering injuries in the horrific attack that claimed three student lives

 Overview of the Settlement Breakdown

Survivor Injury Description Settlement Amount & Benefits
Nathan Statly Bullet wound to the head—brain injury and ongoing care $14.2 million; requires lifelong physical therap
Yukai “John” Hao Paralysis from chest down due to shot to the back $13 million + tuition/room/board/health coverage
Troy Forbush Chest wound—lung injury requiring surgery & rehab $2.5 million

Combined, the settlements total $29.75 million, rounded to $30 million, providing crucial financial support to these survivors as they continue healing and rebuilding their lives. The Human Toll & Recovery Journeys

  • Nathan Statly, once a junior studying environmental biology and zoology, was shot in the head and now faces extensive rehabilitation and ongoing care. His attorney described him as “doing quite well” but emphasized his need for lifelong therapy.

  • Yukai “John” Hao, an international economics major, remains paralyzed from the chest down. His agreement includes long-term educational and medical support—a lifeline as he pursues both undergraduate and graduate studies.

  • Troy Forbush, an aspiring music educator, was struck in the chest, suffering lung damage requiring both surgery and extensive rehabilitation. The settlement reflects the physical and emotional impact he continues to endure.

In a statement, Grewal Law and Gruel Mills Nims & Pylman remarked these resolutions provide “closure to one chapter of these survivors’ healing journeys.”

University Response & Broader Settlement Context

MSU’s official statement expressed hope that the settlement would “provide some measure of relief, support and care to impacted individuals and their families.”

Earlier, the university had settled with families of the three students killed—Brian Fraser, Arielle Anderson, and Alexandria Verner—for approximately $5 million each in late 2023. An additional survivor reached a private settlement in April.

Since the Feb 13 shooting—carried out by 43-year-old Anthony McRae—classes were cancelled temporarily, counseling services expanded, and student protests called for stronger gun safety measures.
