Vaught was born in Texas in 1909 and became Ole Miss’ head coach in 1947, immediately transforming the school from underdog to juggernaut. During his 24-year coaching career, Vaught posted an astounding 190-61-12 record, including six SEC championships (1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962, 1963), and led the Rebels to 18 bowl games. The accolade is especially meaningful to Ole Miss alumni and fans, who continue to appreciate Vaught’s influence. Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the Rebels’ home ground, is not only named after him, but it also serves as a living tribute to his contributions.
