In an emotional and open moment that caught Cougar Nation off guard, BYU Head Football Coach Kalani Sitake took the microphone Tuesday morning to address growing speculation about his health — and his sincere statement left everyone who loves BYU football deeply impacted.
For weeks, suspicions circulated on social media about Coach Sitake’s health after he became less visible during various off-season events. Today, in front of a packed press room full of players, reporters, and BYU fans, the beloved coach cleared the air — and provided a profound reminder about resilience, family, and perspective.

“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude for all of your concern, thoughts, and prayers,” Sitake began, his voice calm yet impassioned. “Many people have noticed that I’ve been dealing with some personal health issues.” And I’d like to address it directly: I had a health scare recently, which forced me to slow down and take extra care of myself. But I want everyone to know that I’m fine. I’m here. And I will keep working for this squad, this program, and all of you.”
The 48-year-old coach, who is known for his energy, positivity, and strong bond with his players, explained that doctors advised him to reduce his stress and focus on his well-being following some concerning tests in the spring. Members of his family and coaching staff sat alongside him, offering unwavering support as he talked.
“This experience has been humbling,” Sitake added. “It reminds you that, at the end of the day, health and family come first, as do this program and community. Coaching these players and representing BYU has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Nothing will prevent me from showing up every day with passion and devotion, even if I take better care of myself. My purpose has not altered, even though the journey may appear different.
The passionate sentiments sparked ripples of support across Cougar Nation. Current and past players, alumni, and fans took to social media with poignant messages of support, using hashtags like #SitakeStrong, #BYUFamily, and #CougarTogether.
BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe responded briefly following the news conference to express the program’s full support for Sitake:
“Kalani has always put this program and its people first,” she stated. “And now we’re standing together to support him. He’s a fantastic leader, and we like his honesty and bravery. Everyone at BYU supports him as he continues to lead this squad with heart.”

The Cougars, who are gearing up for the upcoming Big 12 season, departed the room with renewed enthusiasm and a stronger sense of solidarity, a striking indication of their coach’s lasting influence.
And, as Kalani Sitake looks ahead, his message is clear: his health is better, his passion is strong, and BYU, with Cougar Nation behind him, will fight for every inch of success.
