In a truly historic moment for rugby, Liam Farrell, the indomitable Wigan Warriors and England international forward, has been awarded the Esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes his unparalleled contributions to rugby and unwavering commitment to the development of grassroots rugby in the UK and beyond.

Liam Farrell signs new two-year deal with Wigan Warriors – Total Rugby League

The mood was electrifying at the crowded ceremony in London’s historic Royal Albert Hall, as players, coaches, legends, and fans gathered to honour one of rugby league’s most committed sons. Farrell, known for his tireless work ethic, intense commitment, and on-field brilliance, was clearly moved as he accepted the award, which recognizes not just a remarkable playing career but also a legacy of mentorship, advocacy, and community contribution.

Farrell has spent his whole professional career with the Wigan Warriors, making him a living emblem of team loyalty and consistency. Over the course of more than a decade, he made hundreds of appearances, won several Super League titles and Challenge Cups, and was an important member of England’s international squad. But, beyond the hardware, what drew him to fans and teammates alike was his unwavering character, modesty, and commitment to the sport’s principles.

His grassroots work inspired the establishment of the Farrell Foundation, which provides junior rugby clubs with financing, equipment, and coaching assistance. The charity also provides inclusive programs that introduce rugby to children with impairments and young people from various cultural backgrounds. According to one junior coach from Leeds, “Liam didn’t just show up for a photo—he stayed, he taught, and he inspired.”

Farrell accepted the medal with trademark modesty:

“I never expected this. I just wanted to play my favorite game while also giving back to the places and people that helped shape me. This is a team sport, and all I’ve accomplished is due to the individuals who believed in me – my family, teammates, coaches, and the children who remind me every day why this game is important.”

Tributes flowed in from around the rugby world. Former England captain Jamie Peacock referred to Farrell as “the heart of English rugby league,” while Sam Tomkins characterized him as “a warrior with a heart of gold.”

As the standing ovation began, one thing was clear: Liam Farrell’s impact would be felt far beyond the try line. His award recognizes not only a magnificent rugby career, but also a life dedicated to inspiring others through the spirit of the game.

Congratulations, Liam Farrell, a wonderful servant of rugby. 🏉
