East Lansing, Michigan — Michigan State University is proud to recognize Nyla Hampton, a standout guard for the MSU Women’s Basketball team, as the 2025 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award recipient — an honor reserved for those who exemplify character, integrity, and respect both on and off the court.
Hampton, who transferred to Michigan State before the 2024-25 season, rapidly established herself as a ferocious defender and floor captain, as well as a shining example of poise, modesty, and leadership. Her influence extended far beyond the box score, making an imprint in the locker room, the classroom, and the community.
Every year, the Big Ten chooses one male and one female student-athlete from each of its member institutions to be recognized for sportsmanship. From that group, two overall winners are picked, and Nyla Hampton stood out this year.
Hampton, known for her unrelenting defensive energy and cool temperament in high-pressure situations, was praised by teammates and opponents alike for her ability to play the game the right way – with fairness, tenacity, and elegance.
“Nyla is the kind of person every coach wishes to have,” stated MSU Women’s Basketball Head Coach Robyn Fralick. “She holds herself to an extremely high standard, and her leadership style is subtle yet effective. This award embodies who she is: thoughtful, driven, and deeply respectful of others.
Whether it was assisting a fallen opponent off the court, teaching younger players, or volunteering at local elementary schools, Hampton exemplified what it means to be a Spartan.
Her move to East Lansing after a great career at Bowling Green, where she was twice voted MAC Defensive Player of the Year. But at Michigan State, she elevated more than just her stats; she elevated the culture.
“I play the game because I love it, and I believe how you treat people matters,” Hampton told me. “Being recognized for that signifies more than a statistic. I am tremendously thrilled and grateful to be able to represent Michigan State in this way.”
The Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award is about people, not just athleticism. And in Nyla Hampton, the conference found an excellent example.
As she continues to lead with compassion and humility, one thing becomes clear: Nyla Hampton is more than just a defensive force on the court; she is a true ambassador for the game and Michigan State University.
