ESPN REPORT: Elon Musk Proposes Renaming Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium to “Tesla Field” and Redesigning Hurricanes Jerseys — Dan Radakovich Declines the Deal for This Reason

In another headline-making move, tech mogul Elon Musk has reportedly approached the University of Miami with a stunning proposal to rename Hard Rock Stadium to “Tesla Field” in exchange for a long-term sponsorship deal that would include redesigned Hurricanes football uniforms and integrated Tesla branding throughout the stadium experience.

But despite the multi-million-dollar offer, Miami Athletic Director Dan Radakovich has rejected the proposal, citing a deep commitment to the school’s legacy, values, and relationship with the South Florida community.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Musk’s offer included exclusive Tesla naming rights for 20 years, a Tesla-branded VIP fan experience, and a full redesign of the Hurricanes’ home and away uniforms — reportedly featuring futuristic materials, digital accents, and a black-and-silver color scheme inspired by Tesla vehicles.

“It was sleek, ambitious, and very Elon,” said one source close to the discussions. “But the vision didn’t align with the Hurricanes’ core identity.”

Hard Rock Stadium, which serves as the home of both the Miami Hurricanes and the Miami Dolphins, has been under its current naming agreement since 2016. Musk’s proposal would have not only replaced the iconic branding but also reimagined the stadium as a tech-forward, fan-driven experience — including self-driving shuttle access, AI-based ticketing, and zero-emissions tailgate areas powered by Tesla solar tech.

However, Radakovich remained firm in his stance.

“While we appreciate Tesla’s interest, the University of Miami has a proud tradition that must be honored,” Radakovich said in a statement. “We are focused on building champions both on and off the field — with partners who share our long-term vision for education, athletics, and community.”

Musk’s interest in college athletics isn’t entirely surprising. With Tesla expanding its brand reach and looking to tap into younger audiences, high-visibility college programs like Miami offer massive exposure and cultural impact. Still, this marks the second major rejection of a Musk stadium rebranding deal in recent weeks, following a similar failed proposal to the Houston Astros.

Reactions across social media have been swift and divided. Some fans praised Radakovich’s “integrity play,” while others saw the refusal as a missed opportunity for cutting-edge upgrades and massive investment into the program.

“Elon tried to buy The U,” one fan posted on X. “But The U isn’t for sale.”

For now, Hard Rock Stadium remains unchanged — and so does the Hurricanes’ commitment to their roots.

The message from Coral Gables is clear: tradition matters, and not even Elon Musk can rewrite it.
