Netflix, ESPN, and Guinness World Records Unite for Powerful New Documentary Chronicling the Legendary Career of J.J. Watt
In an unprecedented collaboration, Netflix, ESPN Films, and the Guinness World Records have announced a powerful new documentary that will chronicle the extraordinary career of J.J. Watt, the iconic defensive end who redefined dominance, leadership, and excellence in the National Football League.
Titled “WATT: Relentless”, the feature-length documentary will premiere globally on Netflix in early 2026, with exclusive behind-the-scenes content and a special extended cut to be aired on ESPN+. The project marks the first time these three global institutions have come together to tell the story of a single athlete, underscoring Watt’s massive cultural and athletic impact.
The film will follow Watt’s rise from a walk-on tight end at Central Michigan to a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, five-time Pro Bowler, and one of the most feared—and respected—players to ever step on a football field. Known for his unrelenting motor, unmatched work ethic, and charitable heart, Watt’s journey is told through never-before-seen footage, intimate interviews with family and teammates, and insights from some of the NFL’s greatest minds.
> “J.J. Watt’s story transcends football,” said Marie Donoghue, VP of Global Sports Content at Netflix. “It’s about grit, giving, and the pursuit of something bigger than yourself.”
The film will also spotlight Watt’s record-setting moments, including his legendary 2012, 2014, and 2015 seasons, when he amassed double-digit sacks, deflected passes, scored touchdowns, and even took snaps on offense—all while anchoring a Texans defense that became the heart of Houston’s identity. His inclusion in the Guinness World Records for several defensive milestones—including most seasons with 20+ sacks—is a focal point of the documentary.
Equally powerful is the coverage of Watt’s impact off the field. In the wake of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Watt raised over $41 million for recovery efforts, earning him global recognition and the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
> “This film isn’t just about football. It’s about family, community, and how one man became a symbol of resilience for millions,” said Watt, who serves as co-executive producer on the project.
With narration by Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey and appearances from legends like Tom Brady, Aaron Donald, and DeAndre Hopkins, “WATT: Relentless” promises to be one of the most emotional and inspirational sports documentaries ever produced.
The documentary is currently in post-production and will be part of Netflix’s “Icons of the Game” series, with a premiere expected in March 2026.
