In an era when money often influences collegiate football decisions, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has delivered a clear message to Red Raider Nation and beyond: loyalty is still important. On Friday, McGuire formally declined multiple lucrative offers from elite institutions across the country, opting to stay and build on the foundation he’s created in Lubbock.
“Lubbock, Texas, is home,” McGuire stated in a statement distributed by Texas Tech Athletics. “I came here to assist bring and win championships for this great university and team, and that mission has not changed. The supporters’ backing, the institution’s enthusiasm, and my trust in this team all transcend any financial offer from elsewhere.

McGuire’s decision to stay comes at a critical time for Texas Tech football. After taking over in 2021, he instilled new vitality into the program, guiding the Red Raiders to consecutive winning seasons with hallmark victories over Texas and Oklahoma. Under his direction, Texas Tech has re-established itself as a Big 12 powerhouse, as well as a team known for its toughness, heart, and discipline.
But McGuire’s impact extends far beyond the win column. He has altered the culture in Lubbock, creating a fanbase that is more united and energized than ever. His connection to the community, unwavering commitment to recruiting in Texas, and open-door leadership style have won over players, parents, alumni, and contributors.
“Coach McGuire didn’t just build a team—he’s building a family here in Lubbock,” remarked Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt. “This university stands taller today because of his loyalty, vision, and integrity.”
McGuire has got offers from a number of SEC and Big Ten colleges over the last month, with some proposals worth more than $8 million annually. However, the seasoned coach made it obvious that the road with Texas Tech is far from over.
Star quarterback Behren Morton summed it up best on social media, tweeting:
“Coach McGuire is staying at home!” Let us continue what we started. #WreckEm”
For Red Raider fans, the announcement was nothing short of exciting. Social media erupted with tweets applauding the news, and Texas Tech’s official goods store sold out of “Joey McGuire is Home” T-shirts within minutes of the statement being released.

As the 2025 season approaches, expectations in Lubbock are sky-high – and with good reason. With a rich recruiting class, a stacked coaching staff, and the program’s heart intact, Texas Tech is ready to contend not only for Big 12 dominance but also for national prominence.
Joey McGuire could have pursued greener pastures, but instead he decided to water the one he had already grown. In doing so, he has cemented himself firmly in the tradition of Texas Tech greatness.
Way to go, Coach McGuire. Lubbock is proud, and the best is still to come. 🔴⚫ #wreckem
