East Lansing, Michigan — Michigan State University men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo, one of college athletics’ most famous leaders, has released a poignant and passionate statement in the aftermath of the tragic floods that have decimated Kerr County and the Texas Hill Country. Moved by the incredible loss of life and destruction, particularly the horrific toll on young girls and their families, Coach Izzo and MSU administration have contributed $400,000 to fund emergency relief operations on the ground.

“My heart is heavy as we witness the devastation and loss of life caused by the floods in Kerr County and Texas Hill Country,” Izzo said in a written statement released Saturday. “Especially for the young girls and their families, as well as everyone who has died and their loved ones. This has been horrible to witness, and we keep everyone affected in our thoughts and prayers.”

Izzo’s message, albeit brief, was a powerful call to empathy and action. Izzo, known for his strong emotional intelligence and ability to connect with people outside of basketball, underlined the need of compassion and community across state lines and sports rivalries.

“Standing side by side with the Salvation Army’s critical response, I and Michigan State University are donating $400,000 to provide immediate resources for rescue, relief, and long-term recovery efforts.”

The Salvation Army’s emergency response team is coordinating the donation, which will be used for both immediate catastrophe relief and long-term community rehabilitation. The contributions will be used to provide clean water, food, shelter, medical care, and psychological assistance to families displaced and devastated by the flash floods.

MSU President Dr. Teresa Woodruff also issued a statement, congratulating Izzo for once again leveraging his platform for the greater good.

“Coach Izzo has always demonstrated a sense of service and community leadership. His quick actions and passionate remarks remind us all of what it means to be a Spartan—not only in victory, but also in compassion and solidarity with others in times of difficulty.”

The floods that have devastated much of Texas Hill Country have left families homeless and entire communities without basic infrastructure. The devastating loss of children and families has stunned the nation, and Izzo’s response has spread far beyond the realm of college basketball, leading others in the NCAA and professional sports community to explore similar gifts.

Tom Izzo, fondly known as “Mr. March” for his basketball accomplishments, continues to demonstrate that his greatest achievements are measured not in banners or Final Fours, but in the lives he affects and the communities he empowers.

In this darkest hour for Texas families, Izzo’s words and actions provide more than just charity; they provide hope.
