Edmonton, Alberta — Edmonton Oilers great Leon Draisaitl delivered an emotionally charged and surprising declaration that shook the NHL community to its core. During a press conference at Rogers Place on Monday morning, the former Hart Trophy winner and team cornerstone addressed swirling rumors about his health, providing much-needed clarity with a poignant update.

Fighting back evident emotion, Draisaitl said, “This isn’t easy for me to say, and it’s something I’ve been carrying quietly for a while. However, I owe it to my teammates, fans, and the Oilers family to be honest. I’ve been struggling with a chronic hip issue that has had a bigger impact on me than I’ve ever admitted.”

Many are surprised by the news, especially given Draisaitl’s ongoing dominance on the ice this season. Despite dealing with pain, the German sensation produced outstanding stats and led Edmonton through important playoff periods. However, as he acknowledged on Monday, his resilience came at a personal cost.

“For the past two years, I’ve endured excruciating discomfort simply to be out there doing what I do. But now, I need to take a step back and care for my body before it’s too late,” he remarked after a long pause. “I will be undergoing a comprehensive rehab program this offseason, and there’s a chance I’ll need surgery if my body doesn’t respond well to treatment.”

The announcement elicited a mixture of sadness and enormous sympathy from Oilers fans and the hockey community at large. Social media erupted with expressions of support, thanks, and respect for the 28-year-old actor’s bravery in facing such a deeply personal struggle.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch and General Manager Ken Holland also lauded Draisaitl’s character, describing him as “a warrior,” “a leader,” and “the heart of the franchise.” Teammates shared these thoughts, with Connor McDavid writing, “No one tougher. No one is more committed. We have your back every step of the way, brother.”

In a very moving moment, Draisaitl addressed the Edmonton faithful directly.

“To the fans: you’ve been my family away from home since day one. This city offered me a chance, hugged me, and never let go. I promise you that I am not going anywhere. I’ll do everything in my power to return stronger, better, and ready to compete for the Cup that we all desire.”
