JUST NOW: Kristaps Porzingis Commits $3.6M to Build Shelter for Homeless Youth in Boston
Boston, MA – July 7, 2025
In a powerful show of leadership off the court, Kristaps Porzingis, power forward for the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics, has committed $3.6 million of his own money to transform a historic Boston property into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The announcement was made Monday morning at a joint press event with city officials and local nonprofit partners, where Porzingis outlined his vision for supporting vulnerable young people who are often overlooked in urban areas.
> “Basketball gave me a platform, but giving back gives me purpose,” Porzingis said. “This is about making sure no young person in Boston ever has to sleep on the street.”
🏠 A Home for Hope
The $3.6 million will be used to renovate a 10,000-square-foot building in Dorchester into a 24/7 transitional housing facility specifically for unhoused youth aged 16–22. The shelter, called “KP House”, will offer more than just beds. It will feature:
20 fully furnished living spaces
On-site mental health counselors
Job training & educational support services
A small gym and wellness center
Daily meals and hygiene services
The facility is being developed in partnership with Bridge Forward Boston, a local nonprofit specializing in youth outreach.
- > “Kristaps didn’t just write a check — he came to planning meetings, asked hard questions, and committed to long-term funding,” said Jennifer Morales, Executive Director of Bridge Forward. “This isn’t a charity project for him. It’s personal.”
💬 Porzingis: “Boston Has Given Me Everything”
Porzingis, who joined the Celtics in a blockbuster trade in 2023 and played a crucial role in the team’s 2024–25 title run, has quickly become a fan favorite not only for his on-court performance but for his thoughtful engagement with the community.
> “Boston welcomed me. This city has given me everything — joy, support, purpose. I feel responsible to give something back, especially to those who don’t have that same safety net,” Porzingis said at the podium, standing beside several formerly homeless youth.
He credited conversations with teammates like Jaylen Brown and Malcolm Brogdon, both known for their philanthropy, as part of what inspired his investment.
🌟 Celtics, NBA, and Fans Applaud
Celtics President Brad Stevens praised the move, calling it “one of the most meaningful actions” he’s seen from a player in his years in the league.
> “Titles come and go. But what Kristaps is building here will impact lives for generations,” Stevens said.
The NBA Players Association also released a statement, calling Porzingis’ commitment “an inspiring example of what true player leadership looks like.”
Fans across social media platforms have flooded Porzingis’ pages with messages of gratitude and admiration, with many calling him a “Celtic for life” — not for a jumper or block, but for his heart.
⏳ Shelter Set to Open in Early 2026
Construction on KP House is set to begin in August 2025, with an expected opening date in spring 2026. Porzingis has pledged to fund the shelter’s operating costs for its first three years, ensuring stability during its formative phase.
> “This is just the beginning,” Porzingis said, smiling. “We’ve got work to do.”
