Maple Leafs Goaltender Explains Why He Turned Down $10 Million Offer from Edmonton Oilers

In a decision that has sent shockwaves throughout the NHL community, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll has revealed the reasons behind his stunning decision to reject a $10 million contract offer from the Edmonton Oilers. The offer, which would have made him one of the highest-paid goalies in the league, was turned down in what Woll described as a move rooted in loyalty, trust in Toronto’s long-term vision, and a personal commitment to unfinished business with the Maple Leafs.

The 26-year-old netminder, who emerged as the Leafs’ standout performer during the 2024 playoffs, sat down with reporters during a press availability on Wednesday and offered a candid explanation.

> “It wasn’t just about the money. I’ve always believed that where you play and who you play for means just as much—if not more—than how much you’re paid,” Woll said. “Toronto believed in me when I was just starting out, and now that I’m finally healthy and playing my best hockey, I feel like I owe it to the team, the fans, and myself to see this through.”

Faith in the Leafs’ Vision

Woll emphasized his faith in the current management group and head coach Craig Berube, who has brought a renewed focus on structure, accountability, and defensive support. After years of playoff disappointment, the Leafs appear to be moving in a direction that resonates with Woll’s belief in building something sustainable.

> “I think people underestimate how much stability and a clear plan means to a player,” Woll explained. “I look around our locker room, and I see leaders like Auston [Matthews], Mitch [Marner], and Morgan [Rielly] putting in everything they have. That kind of culture is hard to walk away from.”

Oilers’ Pitch Was Tempting — But Not Enough

According to multiple league insiders, the Oilers’ offer was front-loaded, included significant performance bonuses, and would have secured Woll’s services for four years. The Oilers, still reeling from their Stanley Cup Final loss and recent rejection by Connor McDavid of a Panthers offer, were aggressively pursuing upgrades between the pipes.

Woll acknowledged that the Oilers’ proposal was “flattering” and praised the franchise’s elite core, including Leon Draisaitl and McDavid, but noted that the fit simply wasn’t right.

> “Edmonton is a great organization, and I have so much respect for what they’ve accomplished. But for me personally, it didn’t feel like home. I’ve built strong relationships in Toronto — on and off the ice — and that matters.”

Personal Factors and Mental Health

Beyond hockey considerations, Woll mentioned the importance of his support system in Toronto. The American-born goalie has spent the bulk of his professional career in the Leafs’ system, developing comfort with the city, teammates, and medical staff — especially after an injury-plagued early career.

> “It took a while for me to find my rhythm in the NHL. Toronto was patient with me. That loyalty and care meant the world during some tough times,” Woll said. “I talked to my family, my agent, and ultimately it came down to more than just business. It was about happiness, purpose, and peace of mind.”

What’s Next?

Woll is expected to begin the 2025–26 season as Toronto’s undisputed No. 1 goaltender, with Ilya Samsonov likely testing free agency. Leafs GM Brad Treliving has hinted that the team will build around Woll as a cornerstone piece.

> “Joseph showed us during the last stretch of the season what he’s capable of. His calm under pressure, technical sharpness, and team-first attitude are everything we want in a Maple Leaf,” Treliving said.

For now, fans can take comfort in knowing that one of the game’s most promising goaltenders chose commitment over cash, and remains laser-focused on helping bring the Stanley Cup back to Toronto — something that hasn’t been done since 1967.

> “We’re not done,” Woll concluded. “Not even close.”
