Penny Hardaway’s Open Letter to Memphis Tigers Basketball, Fans, and the Entire Tigers Community

To My Memphis Tigers Family:

As I sit here to write, my heart is filled with appreciation, love, and reflection. Memphis is more than a city to me; it is home. The University of Memphis is more than a basketball team; it’s a family. And you, the fans, are more than just supporters; you are the driving force behind all we do. Today, I’d like to say thank you.

From the moment I put on a Memphis jersey, I knew I belonged. The love, enthusiasm, and passion of this city have always inspired me—first as a player, then as a coach. You’ve been by my side every step of the way, encouraging me, pushing me ahead, and believing in me even when the odds were stacked against us. That’s the Memphis way: we fight, grind, and never give up.

To my former and present gamers, you are the reason I do this. Coaching, mentoring, and watching you develop into not only excellent athletes but fantastic young men is the greatest honor of my career. I see so much of myself in you: the same ambition, drive, and passion for the game. My goal has always been to prepare you for life after basketball, instilling the qualities of hard effort, teamwork, and resilience. You are the future of our program, and I am extremely proud of each and every one of you.

To the fans: you are the best in the nation. Your consistent support, enthusiasm, and pride in this program are what distinguishes Memphis basketball. You’ve supported us through every win and setback, believing in the vision and the journey. You’ve packed FedExForum, traveled long distances to cheer us on, and made Memphis one of the most thrilling locations in college basketball.

And thank you to the entire Memphis Tigers community—administrators, alumni, staff, and everyone who has contributed to the success of this program—for believing in me, us, and the dream we are creating together.

This isn’t only about basketball. This is about legacy. And as long as I’m here, I’ll do everything I can to make Memphis proud.

With love and thanks.
Penny Hardaway
