Dear Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame Football, devoted fans, and the entire Notre Dame family,

As I put pen to paper, my heart is filled with gratitude, nostalgia, and great pride. This letter is more than just a reflection; it is a celebration of a friendship that spans successes, sorrows, and even time itself. This is my humble attempt to acknowledge a town, a program, and individuals who helped mold the very fabric of my life and legacy.

When I arrived in South Bend in 1986, I realized I was taking on more than just a coaching position. I was joining a sacred tradition. A place where excellence is expected, character is developed, and faith is always part of the plan. I was granted the privilege of leading Notre Dame Football, and the experience was nothing short of amazing.

Thank you, University of Notre Dame. You gave me a purpose beyond football. You gave me the opportunity to guide young men to become not just great athletes, but also great leaders, fathers, and people. You gave me the opportunity to coach in the shadow of legends, walk the sacred grounds of faith and scholarship, and be a part of something bigger than myself.

My heart overflows with love for you, fans. You turned up in the sun, the snow, and every storm in between. You unwaveringly supported this squad, program, and coach. Your voices from Notre Dame Stadium’s stands continue to ring in my soul. You were never just spectators; you were and continue to be family members.

Marcus Freeman, young man, I am quite proud of you. You now bear the mantle with class, honesty, and an unwavering dedication to our principles. You lead with humility, purpose, and a heart that reflects all that Notre Dame stands for. I’ve seen you grow as a coach, mentor, and a beacon of hope for the future of this wonderful institution. Stay the course. Trust your intuition. Respect tradition while remaining open to new ideas. This place believes in you. I believe in you.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey, every single student-athlete who has ever worn that gold helmet. You were and will always be my motivator. My life’s objective was to provide you with the tools you needed to win both on and off the field. Many of you have become champions, not just in football, but in life, which gives me enormous satisfaction.

Notre Dame is more than just a university. It’s a calling. A place for visionaries, warriors, believers, and leaders. I was beyond grateful to be a part of this story. And as I see its future bloom in your capable hands, Marcus, I am filled with peace and pride.

God bless you all, and go Irish — always.

With infinite love and gratitude,
Lou Holtz
head coach of Notre Dame Football from 1986 to 1996.
Forever Irish.
