Alexander Ovechkin’s Epochal Open Letter to the Washington Capitals, Fans, and the Entire Capitals Community
Dear Washington Capitals Family,
As I sit down to write this letter, my heart is full of gratitude, love, and deep appreciation for the great adventure we have taken together. You have been there for me since I first put on the Capitals uniform in 2005, through every goal, victory, challenge, and moment of triumph. You’ve been my family, my inspiration, and my steadfast support system. Today, I’d like to reflect on this trip and convey my heartfelt gratitude to the Washington Capitals organization, their incredible fans, and the entire D.C. community.
From the moment I went on the ice as a Capital, I knew I belonged. Washington became more than just the place where I played; it became my home. The organization welcomed me with open arms, trusted me, and helped me develop into the athlete and leader I am today. The front office, coaches, trainers, and all members of the Capitals staff have helped shape my career. All of this would not have been possible without their unwavering dedication, belief, and support.
My teammates, both past and present, have been like brothers to me on this journey. The long hours of practice, battles on the ice, and celebrations in the locker room have formed connections that will last a lifetime. Each of you has pushed me to be better, work more, and always prioritize the team over everything else. We’ve made memories together that I’ll treasure for the rest of my life, especially when we raised the Stanley Cup in 2018. That victory was for the entire Capitals family, including the fans who had waited so long for that moment.
And to the world’s finest fans, you are the franchise’s beating heart. Your enthusiasm, energy, and undying faith in me and this squad have been the driving force behind every game, goal, and achievement. Whether it was in the noisy and electric Capital One Arena, on the streets of D.C., or through messages from all around the world, your support meant everything to me. You’ve supported me in my highs and lows. I can never thank you enough for your love and dedication to me and my family.
Washington, you’ve given me so much. You have given me the opportunity to live my dream, leave a legacy, and enjoy wonderful experiences with all of you. This journey has never been about me alone; it has always been about all of us, together.
As I proceed forward, please know that my love and commitment to this team and city are as strong as ever. This is my house. You are my family. And we will be forever Washington Capitals.
