An Epochal Open Letter from Luke Fickell to the Ohio State Buckeyes Football Program, Fans, and the Entire Buckeyes Community
Dear Ohio State Buckeyes Family,
With a heart full of appreciation and thought, I write this letter to offer my heartfelt gratitude to a community that has meant everything to me—not just in football, but in life. My life as a player and coach has been fashioned by the scarlet and gray, and there are just not enough words to completely express the influence that The Ohio State University and its exceptional people have had on me.
From my first play as a Buckeye linebacker to my time on the sidelines as a coach, I’ve felt the weight, pride, and responsibility of being a part of one of college football’s most historic teams. Ohio State did more than just teach me the fundamentals of football; it shaped my identity, instilled in me a championship mindset, and provided me with a brotherhood that has endured over the years.
Thank you to the administration and athletic department for believing in me during my journey. From my time as a graduate assistant to being in charge of the program during a transitional period, you provided me with opportunities that not only advanced my career but also taught me leadership, loyalty, and resilience. Your trust was the foundation for every challenge I took on and every victory I celebrated in this sport.
To the Buckeye Nation, your enthusiasm is unrivaled. The roar of the Horseshoe, the sea of red on game days, and the steadfast support through highs and lows—it’s been an honor to be a part of something so steeped in tradition and pride. I’ve felt your excitement on the sidelines, during recruiting visits, and in every part of this beautiful state. You are the heart of Ohio State football.
Thank you to all of the players I’ve taught for your trust, work, and belief. Coaching you was more than just strategy and discipline; it was about developing men’s character and strength. Watching you develop, thrive, and carry on Ohio State’s history was worth every second. And to my other coaches, mentors, and staff, thank you for being a part of this brotherhood. Iron sharpens iron, and I am better because of you.
As my profession progressed and presented me with new challenges, one thing remained: I will always be a Buckeye at heart. The lessons acquired here, the relationships formed, and the principles established will serve me well for the rest of my life.
This is not a farewell, but a genuine thank you. Thank you for shaping, challenging, and supporting me. Ohio State will always remain a part of my soul.
