An open letter from Connor McDavid to the Edmonton Oilers, fans, and the entire Oilers community.
Dear Edmonton Oilers family,
As I reflect on the great experience I’ve had with this organization, I am filled with appreciation. From the moment I stepped onto the ice in an Oilers jersey, I felt nothing but love, support, and unshakeable confidence in myself. Today, I’d like to extend my profound gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this great experience, including my teammates, coaches, management, staff, and, most importantly, the devoted fans who make this franchise so special.
Playing for the Edmonton Oilers is more than just donning a uniform and skating under the dazzling lights of Rogers Place. It’s about becoming a part of something much bigger—a legacy, a culture, and a community that embodies hockey in its purest form. This city lives and thrives on hockey, and being welcomed into such a passionate community has been one of the biggest privileges of my life. From my early days as a young prospect to the present, the road has been filled with unforgettable highs, difficult lessons, and an unshakable devotion to perfection.
To the fans: your enthusiasm motivates us. Your energy uplifts us when we need it the most. Whether it’s a filled Rogers Place chanting in unison or innumerable words of encouragement during triumphs and defeats, I’ve always felt the weight of your commitment. I’ve seen Oilers flags fluttering in the frigid Alberta winters, heard thunderous roars after every goal, and felt the genuine pride that exists in every fan who wears blue and orange. You are the team’s heartbeat; without you, none of this would be possible.
Thank you to my teammates and the Oilers organization for fostering an atmosphere in which I can improve as a player and as a person. The friendships, struggles, and amazing events on and off the ice impacted me in ways I could not have predicted. Respect, hard effort, and an unbreakable camaraderie define the atmosphere in our locker room, and I consider myself extremely fortunate to be a part of it.
To the city of Edmonton, you welcomed me with open arms, and over time, this town has become home. The entire community’s support, from local businesses to youth hockey programs, has taught me what it means to be an Oiler. This city has given me everything, and my daily goal is to give my all in return.
The voyage is far from over. The ultimate goal lies ahead of us, and I assure you that I will continue to give my all to bring this club and city the success they deserve. The path to greatness is never simple, but with this fantastic group of people behind me, I am confident that we will continue to pursue our aspirations together.
Thank you, Edmonton. Thanks, Oilers fans. Thank you for making this journey extra wonderful. I am proud to be an Oiler, now and always.
With thanks and determination,
Connor McDavid
