Columbia, South Carolina — South Carolina Sporting Director Jeremiah Donati has formally announced the formation of the first-ever South Carolina Gamecocks women’s softball program, marking a watershed moment in the Palmetto State’s women’s sports environment. Donati announced the long-awaited announcement at a press conference held Monday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium, alongside University President Dr. Michael Amiridis, university administrators, and women’s sports supporters. The debut season is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026, with recruitment and coaching staff appointments starting immediately.
“This is a proud and transformative day for the University of South Carolina,” Donati told reporters. “We are not only starting a team; we are investing in a legacy. Our dedication to women’s sports has never been stronger, and softball is the ideal next chapter in that journey.”
The inclusion of women’s softball to South Carolina’s athletic program responds to a long-standing demand from students, alumni, and fans throughout the region. With powerful schools already prospering in the SEC such as Alabama, Florida, and LSU, the Gamecocks are poised to join top company, bringing passion, pride, and new rivalries to the diamond.
Plans for a cutting-edge softball facility have already begun, with the program receiving a sizable share of the school’s capital development budget. Donati indicated that the venue will be near the current Gamecock athletics complex, which includes indoor training areas, batting cages, locker rooms, and seating for over 2,000 people.
The university has also committed to conducting a nationwide search for the program’s first head coach, with the goal of choosing a proven leader to lay a solid foundation for the 2025-26 academic year.
South Carolina’s move, which is consistent with Title IX and the national growth of women’s collegiate athletics, represents both progress and aspiration. The relocation will provide more opportunities for female student-athletes in the region, especially in a state with a strong pipeline of high school softball talent.
