Tuscaloosa, Alabama — Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron, widely considered as one of the program’s all-time greats, is making a long-awaited return to Tuscaloosa. McCarron has been named a Player Development Assistant for Alabama’s football program, the university announced Wednesday. McCarron’s name is entrenched in Alabama football history. From 2011 to 2013, he was the team’s starting quarterback, leading the Tide to two consecutive national titles and a remarkable 36-4 record. McCarron, a fan favorite and respected figure, was known for his composure, leadership, and accuracy passing.I’m beyond excited to be back in Tuscaloosa,” McCarron stated during a press conference at Bryant-Denny Stadium. “This place means everything to me. The University of Alabama has influenced who I am as a player and a man, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to guide and develop the next generation of Crimson Tide athletes.” In his new position, McCarron will collaborate closely with players both on and off the field. His primary focus will be on player development, leadership, and assisting athletes in navigating the unique obstacles of balancing football, academics, and personal life. According to NCAA standards, the position does not include on-field coaching duties, but McCarron’s presence on the squad is expected to have a significant impact.

 

Head coach Kalen DeBoer praised McCarron’s inclusion to the staff. “A.J. understands what’s required to succeed here. He has lived it. His background at Alabama, combined with his experiences in the NFL and XFL, provides him with a plethora of expertise to share with our players. He’s a natural leader, and we’re delighted to have him back home. Following an excellent college career, the Cincinnati Bengals selected McCarron in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent numerous seasons as a backup quarterback for various NFL teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Texans. He recently revived his playing career by shining in the XFL, guiding the St. Louis Battlehawks to a great season and reminding.

 

Off the field, McCarron is known for his maturity, family values, and strong ties to Alabama. Married to model and TV personality Katherine Webb-McCarron, the couple has three children and is still involved in community and humanitarian activities. McCarron’s return is a pleasant tale for Alabama fans, many of whom recall his iconic performances in Crimson and White. His leadership during the 2012 and 2013 BCS National Championship seasons remains a watershed moment in the program’s rich history.
