Toronto, Ontario (CBS)— Marcus “M.J.” Jackson, a shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, was convicted to six weeks in county jail and 24 months probation for escaping the scene of a hit-and-run in downtown Toronto, causing a scandal in Major League Baseball. The Blue Jays organization announced that the league is preparing to impose a formal ban under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy—or possibly use its Personal Conduct regulations.

Incident and court proceedings
On May 8, shortly after midnight, Jackson’s vehicle collided with a pedestrian at the junction of King Street West and Bay Street. According to surveillance footage and eyewitness testimony, Jackson briefly stopped before racing away. The pedestrian, a 36-year-old lady, suffered a fractured wrist and moderate concussion but is expected to recover fully.

In court, Jackson’s defense said he “panicked” when he realized the gravity of the tragedy. However, prosecutors contended that his reluctance to remain on the scene and assist emergency treatment proved “gross negligence and a lack of moral accountability.”

At sentencing, Justice Daniel Hartman gave a severe censure.

“Jackson’s status as a public figure carries responsibilities. “His actions, while fleeting, have far-reaching consequences,” Hartman explained. He sentenced the defendant to six weeks in Toronto’s Central North Correctional Centre, followed by two years on probation. Additional penalties include a three-year driving restriction, 200 hours of community service, attendance at a victim-impact course, and financial reparation to the victim.

MLB and Blue Jays’ Response
The Blue Jays released a brief but pointed statement.

“We are deeply concerned by today’s ruling. Jackson’s actions were unacceptable and fell short of the standards we uphold. We will fully comply with MLB on any disciplinary measures. Our priority now is to support the victim and ensure accountability inside our business.”

MLB Commissioner Sandy Alderson said that the league had “initiated its review under the Personal Conduct Policy.” While most incidents of this kind result in paid bans, league officials have warned that Jackson’s criminal conviction could result in a more severe punishment, possibly lasting an entire season or stretching into a lifelong ban.

Team Fallout
Marcus Jackson, 25, a promising middle-infielder for the Blue Jays, was in his fourth season in the major leagues. His departure will result in a major void behind the plate.

Kevin Miller, the Blue Jays manager, told reporters:

“We are disappointed and saddened.” Marcus made a terrible error. Our team must regroup and plan ahead. We have choices for shortstop and will adjust our roster accordingly.”

What’s Next

Jackson has ten days to appeal both his criminal sentence and any resulting MLB discipline. Meanwhile, civil action from the victim’s legal team appears likely. The Blue Jays have pledged to donate to victim‑support organizations and to halt Jackson’s charitable endorsements until the legal process concludes.

This marks the first instance of an MLB contracted player receiving jail time for a hit‑and‑run. The league’s response will establish a precedent for off‑field accountability and athlete conduct moving forward.
