Penny Hardaway, the head coach of Memphis basketball, will find his team in a difficult situation as a result of recent NCAA sanctions.
According to reports, the Memphis men’s basketball program has been placed on two years probation, and the institution will be required to pay fines as a result of academic integrity infractions involving both the men’s basketball and softball programs.
The NCAA determined that Leslie Brooks, an academic advisor, paid two softball student-athletes to complete coursework as well as give test and quiz answers for one of the men’s basketball team’s players. As a result, three student-athletes were found ineligible, despite competing in 20 events across both sports.
Brooks has received a 10-year show-cause penalty. Memphis must pay a $30,000 fine plus a fine worth one percent of the combined budgets of both the basketball and softball programs.
The NCAA also ordered the vacating of three basketball wins, over Wichita State, Temple, and Tulane, that happened while the ineligible player participated.
While the NCAA did not name anyone, Jason Munz of the “Commercial Appeal” reports that the breaches involve former men’s basketball player Malcolm Dandridge and softball players Ally Callahan and Aaliyah Dixon.
