Dawn Staley’s Open Letter to South Carolina Women’s Basketball Fans, and the Entire Gamecock Community
Dear Gamecock family,
As I sit down to write this letter, my heart is overwhelmed with appreciation and love for each and every one of you. The trip we’ve been on together has been nothing short of remarkable, and I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your unfailing support, passion, and belief in me and our program throughout the years.
From the time I came at the University of South Carolina, I sensed the warmth of this community, which welcomed me not just as a coach, but also as a member of its family. Coaching here has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and every moment spent on this journey—through the highs and lows—has only strengthened my passion for this program, this university, and the fantastic people who make it all possible.
To my former and present players: you are the reason I do what I do. Your commitment, effort, and unwavering pursuit of greatness inspire me every day. It has been my greatest joy to watch you develop as athletes, students, and leaders. You have confided in me with your aspirations, and I have had the honor of witnessing them come true. The banners hanging in Colonial Life Arena, the victories, the records broken—these are all testaments to your hard work, heart, and faith in one another. You have established a standard of excellence, and as a result, South Carolina Women’s Basketball has become a national powerhouse.
To the best fans in the world: Whatever the circumstances, you have always been there for us. Rain or shine, here or away, you have made your presence known. You have filled Colonial Life Arena with unrivaled intensity, creating one of college basketball’s most electrifying atmospheres. You’ve been our sixth player, encouragement, and family. Your enthusiasm drives us, and your faith in our team has propelled us to heights we could not have dreamed. I hope you understand that every win we achieve, every milestone we cross, is as much yours as ours.
To the university leadership, administration, and everyone who has worked behind the scenes to help our program: Thank you for believing in the vision and creating an environment in which excellence may grow. Your dedication to our student-athletes, our facilities, and our development has enabled us to compete at the highest levels. Your help has enabled us to create something genuinely unique, and I am grateful beyond words.
South Carolina is more than just where I coach; it is home. The people, the culture, and the strong sense of family that exists in this community are all extremely important to me. What we’ve created together will withstand the test of time, and I’m really proud to be a part of it.
As we look ahead, we realize that our trip is far from over. The purpose is still the same: to compete, inspire, and deliver championships to Columbia. And with all of you on our side, I know there is nothing we can’t accomplish.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this experience so memorable. I am proud to be a Gamecock—now, tomorrow, and forever.
