Julio Rodríguez wrote an open letter to the Seattle Mariners, fans, and community.
Dear Seattle, I knew something was different from the moment I walked into T-Mobile Park, wide-eyed and full of dreams. It wasn’t just the stadium, the history, or the distinctive navy and northwest green—it was you. It was the heartbeat of the city. Fans’ unrelenting passion. I found the brothers in the clubhouse. The family I met in this amazing community. And today, I’m writing not merely to say “thank you,” but to express my heartfelt love and gratitude for all you’ve given me.
To the Mariners organization, thank you for believing in a youngster from Loma de Cabrera, Dominican Republic, and giving him the opportunity to pursue his ambitions on one of baseball’s most prestigious stages. You noticed something in me before the rest of the world did. You mentored, challenged, and provided me with the skills I needed to develop not only as an athlete, but also as a man. Every coach, staff person, and CEO has had an incredible impact on my life. I’ll keep your wisdom with me forever.
My teammates, both past and present, are my brothers. You’ve supported me through slumps, home runs, long road trips, and walk-off victories. We’ve created a culture that values heart, tenacity, solidarity, and pride in the jersey we wear, rather than just winning. I’ve learnt from each of you, and I hope I’ve had some tiny impact in return.
Thank you to our fans—my family—for your tremendous love and support. From standing ovations to chants of “Julio!” booming through the stadium, from tiny kids wearing my jersey to lifelong supporters who’ve stuck with this team through decades of ups and downs, you’ve brought me more joy than I can express. You greeted me like a son. You helped me believe in myself when I needed it the most. You let me be myself, bring my energy and joy to the game, and play with a passion for something bigger than myself. That is a gift that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
This city has provided me more than just a job; it has given me a home. It’s where I became known as “J-Rod.” Where I realized my dream and shared it with millions. Where I laughed, grieved, rejoiced, and hustled—all for you. Your belief carried me through every high and low point.
As we look forward to new seasons, difficulties, and successes, please know that Seattle will always be in my heart, no matter where this road takes us. This isn’t farewell; it’s a meaningful moment to reflect on what we’ve accomplished together. Thank you for being the light in my life, the wind in my sails, and the reason I leave everything on the field. With love, Forever a Mariner.
