An Epochal Open Letter from Justin Verlander to the San Francisco Giants, Fans, and the Entire Giants Community
Dear San Francisco Giants Family,
As I pause to think on the great experience baseball has provided for me, I feel obliged to express my heartfelt gratitude to an organization and community that embraced me with open arms and unflinching belief. This message is more than a goodbye or a milestone reflection; it is a heartfelt “thank you” to the San Francisco Giants, the fans, and everyone who helped shape the newest chapter of my career.
When I joined the Giants, I was well into my professional career—battle-tested, full of experiences, and still passionate about the game. However, what I discovered in San Francisco was more than just another stop on my baseball journey; it was a rejuvenation. The Giants did more than just bring me in; they welcomed me, challenged me, and helped me rekindle my passion for the game in ways I hadn’t felt in years.
Thank you, front office and coaching staff, for believing in what I still had to offer. In a sport that frequently focuses on what comes next, you looked at me and saw what remains. You gave me the freedom to compete, the trust to lead, and the opportunity to leave a legacy that will last generations. I never felt like a transient piece; I felt like a Giant through and through.
Thank you to the front office and coaching staff for believing in what I could still offer. In a sport that frequently focuses on what comes next, you looked at me and saw what is still there. You gave me the freedom to compete, the trust to lead, and the chance to leave a legacy that will last generations. I never felt like a transient piece; I always felt like a Giant.
To my teammates, I appreciate your fraternity and solidarity. It’s one thing to play with talented people; it’s quite another to share the pitch with folks who inspire you every day. Whether we were celebrating a major win or working through the tough innings, I treasured the energy, jokes, and brotherhood we created. You’ve reminded me that the journey is equally important as the destination.
To the fans, words are never enough. I felt your excitement from the moment I stood on the mound at Oracle Park. You bring spirit to the game. Your cheers encouraged me. Your loyalty helped to keep me grounded. And your belief motivated me. Every time I made a start at that ballpark, I knew I wasn’t pitching alone; I was pitching for a community that bleeds orange and black.
And to the entire Giants community, thank you for every behind-the-scenes effort that made the road easier. Staff, trainers, grounds crew, journalists, and others—you are the unsung heroes. This team performs at a world-class level because to your tireless dedication.
San Francisco provided me with more than just another chapter; it also renewed my sense of legacy, pride, and enthusiasm for the game. I always leave the mound with a full heart and a grateful soul.
This city, team, and family will always hold a special place in my heart. Once a giant, always a giant.
With love and thanks.
