In a university announcement that stunned and inspired the Hokies community, Megan Duffy, head coach of Virginia Tech’s women’s basketball team, revealed that she is donating a total of $2.75 million from her recent performance bonus to fuel a broad slate of initiatives that aim to uplift both athletics and academics at

The move includes a $2 million commitment to the Virginia Tech Revamp Project, a significant initiative aimed at updating student-athlete facilities, extending campus wellness infrastructure, and strengthening the academic support ecosystem for student-athletes and the general student population. Duffy’s tremendous contribution makes her one of the most philanthropic coaches in college athletics.

“This program, this university — they’ve believed in me, empowered me, and embraced our women’s basketball team like family,” Duffy said in a press statement. “This is my way of saying thank you and paying it forward for generations of Hokies to come.”

In addition to the Revamp Project funding, Duffy will contribute $750,000 to student enrichment and mental health services, with a focus on marginalized, first-generation, and underserved students. The grant will support Virginia Tech’s programs in academic tutoring, emotional wellness programming, and post-graduate career preparation.

“Student success doesn’t stop at the classroom door or the final buzzer,” Duffy told me. “We have a responsibility to assist kids develop the tools they need to prosper in life, especially those who have previously faced obstacles. This is about creating a stronger, more inclusive future.

Virginia Tech President Tim Sands hailed Duffy’s “visionary generosity and enduring commitment” to the whole Hokie community. “Coach Duffy isn’t just leading one of the nation’s most competitive basketball programs — she’s leading a movement grounded in service, humility, and transformative impact,” according to him.

Since taking over at Virginia Tech, Duffy has brought the Hokies’ women’s basketball program to national prominence. Her teams are noted not only for their tenacity and discipline on the court, but also for their strong community involvement and academic achievements.
