Lubbock, Texas— In what will be remembered as a watershed moment in Texas Tech Red Raiders women’s basketball history, two of the program’s best stars have received national recognition. Head Coach Krista Gerlich has been selected Coach of the Year, while outstanding guard Bailey Maupin has been named Most Valuable Player, earning the program’s first-ever double win.

Krista Gerlich - Women's Basketball Coach - Texas Tech Red Raiders

The announcement comes only days after the Red Raiders had a breakout season that defied preseason expectations and rekindled the passion of Lady Raider basketball in Lubbock and beyond. Under Coach Gerlich’s direction, Texas Tech exploded into the national discourse with a gritty, disciplined, and fearless style of play, propelling the team back to the top tier of women’s collegiate basketball.

“This is not just my award; it belongs to every player, assistant, and fan who supported us,” said Coach Gerlich, who was clearly upset during her acceptance speech. “We built this together, and Bailey Maupin is the heartbeat of our success.”

Bailey Maupin, a sophomore superstar from Gruver, Texas, has become a household name this season, impressing fans with her scoring skills, court vision, and leadership under duress. Maupin averaged 19.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, including game-winning shots over conference giants Baylor and Iowa State.

“It’s surreal,” Maupin stated upon getting the MVP award. “I grew up dreaming of times like this. None of this would be possible without Coach Gerlich, my teammates, and the incredible Red Raider family, who believed in me even on difficult days.”

The chemistry between coach and player has been critical to the team’s success. Gerlich, a former Lady Raider, returned to Lubbock in 2020 with the goal of regaining the program’s past prominence. Her strategy focused on attracting in-state talent, stressing defense, and cultivating a culture of belief and accountability. With Maupin leading the charge on the court, that vision has become a vivid reality.

Fans, alumni, and past players have showered social media with greetings and admiration. Kirby Hocutt, Texas Tech’s athletic director, described it as “a transformative season” and praised Gerlich’s impact as “generational.” The team’s games at the United Supermarkets Arena were consistently sold out, demonstrating West Texas’ increased interest in women’s basketball.

Beyond the victories, what distinguishes this achievement is the integrity and spirit behind it. Gerlich and Maupin are more than just coaches and players; they are role models who embody the qualities of hard effort, humility, and perseverance.

As the Red Raiders look ahead to a bright future, one thing is certain: Texas Tech women’s basketball has entered a new era of excellence, led by Coach of the Year Krista Gerlich and MVP Bailey Maupin.

Wreck ’em, Tech—the greatest is yet to come.
