CBS News: Texas Tech Coach Donates Entire $3.6 Million Salary to Turn Homes Into Shelters for Homeless Youth

Lubbock, Texas — May 7, 2025

In an unprecedented act of generosity, Texas Tech University’s head football coach, James “Jim” Walker, announced Tuesday that he will donate his entire annual salary and bonuses—amounting to approximately $3.6 million—to fund the conversion of three residential properties into shelters for homeless youth in Lubbock and surrounding areas.

Walker, who led the Red Raiders to a Big 12 championship last season, revealed his plans in an emotional press conference at Jones AT&T Stadium.

“This community has given me so much, and it’s time I give something back that truly matters,” Walker said, holding back tears. “No young person should have to sleep on the streets or feel abandoned. If football can change lives, so can this.”

The three properties, located near downtown Lubbock, will be renovated into safe housing facilities, each providing food, counseling services, educational support, and career training for homeless youth ages 16-24. The shelters are expected to open by early 2026 and will be operated in partnership with Lubbock Youth Outreach, a local nonprofit dedicated to assisting at-risk youth.

Walker’s donation will cover the purchase price of the homes, full renovations, staffing costs for the first two years, and program development. He also pledged to personally mentor youth living in the shelters.

University President Dr. Linda Garcia praised Walker’s commitment. “This is more than a donation—it’s a legacy of compassion. Coach Walker’s leadership off the field is as inspiring as his achievements on it.”

Players and coaching staff expressed admiration for Walker’s decision. Star quarterback Ethan Morales shared, “Coach always tells us it’s not just about football—it’s about being good men. Today, he showed us what that really means.”

Walker, 51, is in his fourth year as head coach at Texas Tech, with a career record of 34-18. Despite speculation that he might leave for a higher-profile program, Walker emphasized he’s “committed to Lubbock for the long haul.”

“I can’t take the wins and trophies with me when I’m gone,” Walker told reporters. “But if I can help even one kid find hope, that’s worth more than any championship ring.”

Construction on the shelters is slated to begin this summer. Walker encouraged fans and alumni to support the initiative through volunteer work and donations.

“This is just the start,” he said. “We can all be part of the solution.”
