DEAL DONE: Steelers Extend GM Omar Khan Through 2028 Season
The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced a new three-year contract extension for General Manager Omar Khan, ensuring he will remain with the franchise through at least the 2028 NFL season. The deal marks a strong vote of confidence from Steelers ownership in Khan’s leadership and vision for the team’s future.
Khan, who officially took over as general manager in May 2022 following the retirement of long-time GM Kevin Colbert, has quickly earned a reputation for his sharp negotiation skills, roster management savvy, and ability to balance short-term competitiveness with long-term sustainability. Often referred to as the “Khan Artist” by fans and media, he has made several impactful moves that have positioned the Steelers to compete in a highly competitive AFC North.
During his short tenure, Khan has already orchestrated a number of key trades and signings, including acquiring wide receiver Allen Robinson II, linebacker Kwon Alexander, and offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo. He also made headlines for trading wide receiver Chase Claypool to the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick, which later became the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft — a move widely praised as one of the most lopsided trades in recent years.
Khan’s 2023 draft class further cemented his reputation, with first-round pick Broderick Jones, second-rounder Joey Porter Jr., and third-round linebacker Nick Herbig all contributing early in their careers. His focus on building through the trenches and adding young, athletic talent reflects a clear vision for a modern, physical Steelers team.
Steelers President Art Rooney II released a statement expressing the organization’s excitement about Khan’s extension: “Omar has done an excellent job in his role as General Manager. His understanding of our organization’s values and his ability to lead in the ever-changing NFL landscape make him the right person to continue building this team.”
Khan’s background is rooted in finance and salary cap management. He joined the Steelers in 2001 and held multiple executive roles before ascending to GM. His deep familiarity with the organization’s culture, combined with a forward-thinking approach, makes him a unique figure in the front office landscape.
With head coach Mike Tomlin also recently reaffirmed as the team’s leader, the Steelers appear to have a solid foundation in place both on the field and in the front office. As Pittsburgh continues its quest to return to Super Bowl contention, Omar Khan’s leadership will be a central component of the team’s long-term strategy.
