Green’s life would never be the same again. During a mission in Baghdad, a rocket-propelled grenade struck the rooftop where she was stationed, causing her to lose her left arm below the elbow. The injury could have ended her story, but it really marked the beginning of a wonderful new chapter.
Rather than being defined by misfortune, Green used her personal loss to inspire and encourage others. She returned home with a renewed determination to serve and encourage her fellow veterans. Green received her master’s degree in counseling and began working relentlessly to assist service people dealing with the physical and emotional traumas of war. Green’s work with the Department of Veterans Affairs and numerous charitable groups has offered many veterans with therapy, mentorship, and advocacy, assisting them in navigating their obstacles and reclaiming their lives.
The Pat Tillman Award for Service, named after the former NFL great who gave up his football career to serve in the military and was slain in Afghanistan, honors those who demonstrate courage, sacrifice, and dedication to others.
