Danielle Green, a former Florida State Seminoles women’s basketball player, Iraq War veteran, and Purple Heart recipient, received the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2025 ESPY Awards, exemplifying courage, perseverance, and the indestructible human spirit. The honor was a remarkable tribute to a lady whose journey through athletics, military service, and advocacy has had an everlasting impact on countless lives.
Green’s narrative is one of grit and grace. As a top guard for the Florida State Seminoles, she gained respect both on and off the court for her leadership, drive, and competitive spirit. However, it was her decision to serve her country that would shape her reputation well beyond the basketball court. Driven by a desire to protect and serve, Green joined the United States Army, where she became a military police officer stationed in Iraq during the height of the conflict.
In May 2004, while stationed in Baghdad, Green’s unit was attacked. A rocket-propelled grenade struck her position, and the blast severed her left arm. She received the Purple Heart in recognition of her bravery and sacrifice. Even though her injuries may have ended her narrative, Green refused to be defined by what she had lost. Instead, she discovered a new purpose in what she could provide.
Following her recuperation, Green dedicated herself to assisting other veterans in their healing and rebuilding efforts. She received a master’s degree in counseling and began working with wounded warriors, military families, and people dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder and reintegration into civilian life. Her compassion and lived experience enabled her to become a light of hope for many people, particularly women veterans who face a difficult and often neglected road.
The Pat Tillman Award for devotion, named after the former NFL star who abandoned football to join a United States Army Ranger and was killed in action, recognizes those who exemplify devotion, sacrifice, and selflessness. Green’s story exemplifies Tillman’s values: a top athlete who heeded the call to serve and continues to inspire others through advocacy and action.
