Dear Family of the Virginia Cavaliers,
I am filled with a great deal of gratitude, introspection, and appreciation for each and every one of you who has shared in my journey within this remarkable Cavaliers family as I sit down to write this letter. I sensed something unique as soon as I arrived in Charlottesville, not just in the John Paul Jones Arena’s corridors but also in the souls of individuals who proudly, dignifiedly, and steadfastly don the orange and blue.
You welcomed me into this program and this community not just as a coach but as a part of a larger family based on custom, excellence, and solidarity. One of the greatest honors of my life has been the chance to be a part of this legendary institution and to add to its rich basketball tradition.
I want to express my gratitude to the young men I’ve had the honor of coaching. You believed in me, put in your best effort, and exemplified the virtues of fortitude, self-control, modesty, and fraternity. You both went above and beyond, never stopped wanting to improve, and demonstrated to the world what true Cavalier pride is all about. My biggest reward has been witnessing your growth as players and people. Words cannot adequately express the impact you have had on my life.
Thank you to the Virginia basketball supporters, who are the team’s lifeblood. We appreciate your enthusiasm, your applause, and your unwavering faith in us through all of our highs and lows. Your enthusiasm in Charlottesville’s streets, your presence in the stands, and your supportive comments served as a daily reminder to me of why we do what we do. This is a community united by a common love and purpose, not just a basketball town.
We would like to express our gratitude to the administration and staff for their leadership and for fostering an atmosphere that not only allowed but also promoted professional and personal development. By allowing me to lead, innovate, and learn, you influenced not only my coaching philosophy but also my personality.
And to everyone in the Cavaliers community, from parents to volunteers, alumni to kids, your generosity, faith, and support have meant more than you can ever know. Charlottesville felt like home because of you, and I will always cherish the connections we created here, no matter where life takes me.
Know that a part of my heart will always be with the Cavaliers as I turn the page and look to the future. In addition to victories and seasons, this program has given me friendships, lifelong experiences, and lessons that I will never be able to repay.
With pride, love, and unending appreciation,
Ryan Odom
Forever a Cavalier.
