An Epochal Open Letter from Nathan MacKinnon to the Colorado Avalanche, Fans, and the Whole Avalanche Community
Dear Avalanche family,
From the moment I laced up my skates in Denver, I felt I was part of something extraordinary. Now, as I reflect on my time with the Colorado Avalanche, I’m overcome with gratitude, pride, and deep appreciation for everything this organization, its fans, and the city have given me. This is more than simply a thank you note; it is a sincere tribute to a community that has shaped me into the player and person I am today.
Being picked by the Avalanche was a dream come true, but I never knew the tremendous journey that lay ahead. From the highs of championship triumph to the lows of frustrating disappointments, one thing has remained constant: your unfailing support. That support, whether in the thunderous cheers at Ball Arena or in the quiet moments of encouragement throughout Colorado, has been the fuel that has kept me going day after day, year after year.
The Avalanche organization, from ownership to coaching staff and front office, saw potential in an 18-year-old Cole Harbour native and trusted me to develop into a leader. That trust means everything. You provided me with the tools, environment, and belief to thrive—not just as a player, but as someone capable of leading a group of brothers into combat every night. I am eternally grateful for your belief in me.
To my former and current colleagues, you have been more than simply guys in the locker room. You’ve been family. We have sweated, bled, laughed, and cried together. Whether it was suffering through a tough playoff series or celebrating on the ice with the Stanley Cup in our hands, these memories will live in my heart forever. I’ve learnt from each of you, and together, we’ve created a culture that will last.
To the fans, words fall short. You are our team’s heartbeat. You’ve made Colorado the best place in the world to play hockey by filling the arena, lighting up the city in burgundy and blue, and sticking with us even during the toughest seasons. I felt your energy throughout every shift, goal, and setback. You have made this journey unforgettable.
Thank you to the entire Avalanche community, including the trainers, arena personnel, youth hockey coaches, and the kids wearing my jersey who are dreaming big. You are the cornerstone for everything we do.
Colorado has become more than just a place for me to play; it is also my home. It’s where I grew up, matured, and formed lifetime relationships. Whatever the future holds, this town and its people will always be a part of me.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this adventure everything I dreamed for and more.
With heartfelt gratitude and Avalanche pride,
Nathan MacKinnon
