East Lansing, Michigan – July 3, 2025 In a moment that will be remembered in Spartan and college basketball history, Michigan State freshman phenom Coen Carr was overcome with emotion after receiving not one, but three of basketball’s most prestigious honors: the Michael Jordan MVP Award, the NBA Sportsmanship Award, and the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award — an unprecedented trifecta for a college athlete.

The 6-foot-6 forward, known for his high-flying dunks, never-ending energy, and infectious attitude, stood stunned on stage as the audience inside the Breslin Center exploded in thunderous cheers. Carr, who helped Michigan State to the Final Four in his freshman season, was honored not only for his domination on the court, but also for his character, honesty, and selfless effect off the court.

Carr accepted the trophies with tears in his eyes, saying, “I’ve spent my entire life dreaming of moments like this. But it was never about the prizes; it was about making people proud by honorably representing my family, team, and university.” Carr received the Michael Jordan MVP Award, which has generally been designated for pros, as a special tribute from the NBA and Jordan Brand, highlighting his revolutionary impact on college basketball, leadership as a freshman, and ability to elevate those around him. He becomes the first college player to achieve this award.

Equally significant, the NBA Sportsmanship Award recognized Carr’s poise under pressure, respect for opponents, and unwavering optimism – characteristics that have distinguished his brief career. Throughout the season, Carr was frequently seen assisting opponents to their feet, staying late to sign autographs, and lifting teammates during difficult times.

However, it was the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award that moved Carr and many others in the audience to tears. Carr has been recognized for his work with children in impoverished neighborhoods, including the establishment of the “Carr to Care” campaign, which gives mentorship, school supplies, and mental health help to local adolescents. Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo described Carr’s honor as “the most inspiring moment of my entire coaching career,” adding, “Coen is what we all hope college athletics can be — talent, heart, humility, and purpose.”

And if this is simply the beginning, the basketball world — and the globe as a whole — is about to witness the birth of a legend.
