Netflix, ESPN, and Guinness World Records Unite for Groundbreaking Dan Marino Documentary

In an unprecedented collaboration, Netflix, ESPN, and Guinness World Records have announced the release of a powerful new documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Dan Marino—the legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback who redefined excellence in the National Football League (NFL).

Titled “Marino: The Man Behind the Number 13,” the film will explore Marino’s meteoric rise from a Pittsburgh kid with a cannon arm to one of the most iconic quarterbacks in NFL history. The documentary promises a rare glimpse into Marino’s life on and off the field, including behind-the-scenes footage, personal interviews, and commentary from former teammates, coaches, rivals, and current NFL stars who credit him as a pioneer of the modern passing game.

Known for his lightning-fast release, unmatched accuracy, and fierce competitiveness, Marino shattered records throughout his 17-year career with the Dolphins. While he famously never won a Super Bowl, his legacy as one of the most skilled and influential quarterbacks remains untarnished. Marino held over 40 NFL records at the time of his retirement and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

This documentary is particularly notable for the involvement of Guinness World Records, which highlights Marino’s numerous NFL milestones that once stood unmatched—such as his single-season passing yards and touchdown records in 1984, which helped redefine quarterback play. The film will showcase these achievements alongside personal insights from Marino himself, offering a humanizing perspective on his journey through pressure, expectation, and resilience.

ESPN brings its sports storytelling pedigree to the project, weaving in archival game footage, expert analysis, and emotional reflections from those closest to Marino. Meanwhile, Netflix ensures the documentary will reach a global audience—football fans and newcomers alike—who may not fully understand the scope of Marino’s impact on the sport.

> “Dan Marino didn’t just play football—he changed it,” said ESPN executive producer Mark Jeffries. “This film honors not only what he did on the field, but who he is as a leader, a father, and a symbol of perseverance.”

The documentary will also touch on Marino’s post-football life, including his work as a broadcaster, philanthropist, and advocate for autism awareness—a cause close to his heart due to his son’s diagnosis.

“Marino: The Man Behind the Number 13” is set for release in September 2025, just ahead of the NFL’s regular season. With the combined efforts of Netflix, ESPN, and Guinness World Records, the film promises to be the definitive portrait of a quarterback whose legend continues to inspire generations.
